JOB SUMMARY
Under the direction of the Cook County Health (CCH) Chair of the Division of Pulmonary Medicine, the Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine physician performs professional medical work in the medical, educational and research activities throughout the CCH. The physician works in the critical care units and on the pulmonary medicine consultation and ambulatory services as required. Manages critically ill patients and patients with pulmonary disease, performs related duties as required.
Typical Duties
- * Participates as a clinician in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions falling within the specialty of pulmonary and critical care medicine
- * Prescribes necessary treatments and performs necessary procedures to be undertaken, makes unit and laboratory rounds; reviews clinical and other records; examines patients
- * Participates in and supervises the care of patients
- * Provides clinical education and supervision to other critical care unit physician staff and nurses under his/her jurisdiction as a means of ensuring the quality of care for critically ill patients and patients with pulmonary disease
- * Participates in clinical discussions and staff meetings and leads or participates in discussions regarding the care and treatment of patients under the care of primary attending staff
- * Conducts and participates in performance improvement activities
- * Participates in hospital programs; and works not less than forty hours per week at a CCH facility
- * Performs only such procedures and/or treats only such conditions as were approved at the time of appointment and/or reappointment and which are matters of record in his/her file in the office of the Medical Director
- * Serves as full-time attending physician and actively participates in the day-to-day function of patient care as a primary provider to patients in pulmonary and critical care medicine rotations in the system
- * Provides consultation and follow-up for other patients with potentially life-threatening or unstable conditions and pulmonary diseases as needed
- * Must be able to return to the hospital when on call to deal with complex patient conditions
- * Must be able to independently manage complex critically ill patients
- * Sets standards and ensures the provision of consistent high quality care to critically ill patients and patients with pulmonary disease by educating, assisting and guiding primary care physicians in the appropriate management of critically ill patients and patients with pulmonary disease
- * Ensures appropriate triage, management and continuity of care for critically ill outpatients and patients with pulmonary disease by participating in programs and protocols and providing consultation for individual patients when needed
- * Participates in the Division performance improvement program and departmental and hospital performance improvement activities. Takes initiative in identifying and working on system problems related to the care of critically ill patients and patients with pulmonary disease
- * Serves as member of Hospital and system Committees in the CCH as assigned
- * May take on other administrative and leadership roles in Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine when directed
Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- * Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy Medicine (DO) from an accredited college or university
- * Licensed as a physician in the State of Illinois or the ability to obtain license prior to starting employment
- * Current DEA license or the ability to obtain license prior to starting employment
- * Current Illinois Controlled Substance License or the ability to obtain license prior to starting employment
- * Board Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine with special certifications in one or more of the following Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine or must obtain Board Certification within two (2) years of starting this employment
- * Must be able to travel to Cook County Health work sites
- * Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification
- * Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
Preferred Qualifications
- * Board Eligible in Interventional Pulmonary Medicine
- * Two (2) years of inpatient pulmonary and critical care medicine experience
- * Experience performing critical care ultrasound
- * Experience with advanced airway management
- * Experience performing endobronchial ultrasound
- * Experience inserting indwelling pleural catheters
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics
- * Thorough knowledge and understanding of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) to ensure the protection of the confidentiality and security of healthcare information for all patients
- Knowledge of modern principles, practices and techniques of pulmonary and critical care medicine, equipment, instruments and materials used in procedures relating to the specialty; principles, practices and techniques of general medicine
- * Effective interpersonal and communication skills
- * Skills needed to assess a project, develop and carry out a plan of implementation and maintain/manage the project to completion
- * Skill in the use of specialized laboratory equipment where appropriate, and demonstrated teaching and administrative skills
- * Ability to work as a member of an interdisciplinary care team
- * Ability to diagnose medical or surgical problems and to prescribe treatment for conditions arising within the fields of pulmonary, critical care, and sleep medicine
- * Ability to provide supervision and leadership to fellows and residents, attending's, nursing and other support staff within the division
- * Must be able to take initiative, work with or without direct supervision
- * Ability to cooperate with others in same job category to arrange for vacation/time-off coverage
- Must be able to participate in departmental quality improvement and other activities as assigned
