Pediatric Hospitalist at YKHC

Challenge yourself managing chronically ill patients of mainly Yup’ik Alaskan decent with significant respiratory, genetic, metabolic, cardiac, endocrine, neurologic, and infectious disease issues. Hospitalist pediatricians work on the inpatient ward and manage hospitalized children with chronic and/or complicated issues. They are also responsible for providing consultation to family practitioners, emergency medicine physicians, advance practical professionals, and village health aides; attending all high-risk deliveries and pediatric codes; and providing intensive care for patients awaiting transport. They stabilize, manage, and transport critical care and neonatal emergency patients and occasionally fly on medevacs to villages for preterm or high-risk term deliveries.

The Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corporation is a non-profit Tribal Corporation that acts as the primary healthcare provider for the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta's people. YKHC operates a regional hospital and provides dental care, mental health services, and more. The historic homeland is the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta, a lowland river delta. The area, which covers 75,000 square miles and is roughly the size of Oregon, has a population of over 27,000 people who live in 58 rural communities that are not connected by road. Each community has a population of 25 to over 1,000 people. Bethel, the regional transit hub, is home to nearly 7,000 people. Bethel is only accessible by plane, boat, and (in the winter) snowmobiles and four-wheelers from the villages. During the winter, vehicles often use frozen rivers as highways.

The Staff Physician shall be committed to contributing to the Mission of the Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corporation, “..to achieve the greatest possible improvement in the health status of the people of the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta region of Alaska”. The Staff Physician is an employee working under the supervision of the Medical Director who is, in turn, supervised by the Clinical Services Administrator.

The Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corporation (YKHC) administers a comprehensive healthcare system throughout 58 rural communities with a mission of Working Together to Achieve Excellent Health. YKHC serves 58 federally-recognized Tribes and operates 41 Village Clinics. Five larger communities are served by Sub-Regional Clinics. Position Qualifications:

• Must have completed an accredited medical school.
• Must have completed a residency training program and be board eligible or board certified (unless specific exception is made) by the appropriate board of the American Medical Association or the American Osteopathic Association.
• Must have Alaska State License and DEA License.
• Must have the computer skills needed to access computerized medical records.
• Needs the skills and knowledge to practice medicine in the area of their specialty.
• Ability to supervise medical students, residents, physician extenders and community Health Aide clinical practice.
